Éhség - Hunger (2009/2010)
DIALOGUES FROM MY HEAD
- mini-opera for 2 persons and 9 instruments -

with guest-star Orsolya Juhász from Hungary,
for the enlarged GoedLaak orchestra.

Originally written for two sopranos and piano, the new version for soprano and tenor of the piece was performed this august in Budapest.
On this concert you can see a bigger version orchestrated especially for the GoedLaak&Friends, with light designer Emese Csornai from Amsterdam (also helping us as staging consultant) and the original singers, Orsolya Juhasz and the composer himself.
The piece is written on  automatic writings of the composer on papers in between his business cards, when he was working as an insurance agent in 2006. The surreal connections between depicted meaning and their symbols, the dreamlike-recurrent themes and change of roles and personages, the dark but beautiful moods create a special atmosphere, in which one can find his way in a subconscious way.
The text will be kept in original Hungarian, but you can follow a projection on the wall with the magical drawings of Luis Maly and the translation of the matching texts by Kristyan Sarkis type designer.

CHOIRS

Refracting Light recorded with
Hamburg Radio Choir (NDR Vokalensemble)

After a successful premiere NDR Vokal Ensemble recorded the triptych 'Refracting Light' in Hamburg under the baton of Klaas Stok. The three days studio recording was followed by a second concert in Hanover - the video of the webcast is now available.
The piece is based on the visual metaphor that just as Light breaks into infinite colors and angles in a crystal clear prism, that is how Truth breaks in the prism (or prison?) of Words. The three movements show the process.
The 1st showing the pure Light, with a mezzo and baritone solo as Eve and Adam, on Biblical text (thus not containing human ‘opinion’).

The 2nd is the Light being trapped in the prism of Words: observing the DnA of the Word, with a soloist quartet being different characters telling the ‘Truth’ in their own way.
And the 3rd one containing the philosophical content of the piece, on my own text, representing the different angles and colors our opinions can have, and that the source of all problems is when we start uniting only with the ones who are thinking like ‘Us’ and not like ’Them’. The solution being everyone finding and being their own color, yet together we can be all angles and all colors, and together we can assume, what it is like, the pure, undivided Light
- on the other side of this crystal clear prism of Life’.

Setiva (Senses) - for Soprano and Bass soloist and  mixed choir  (2007-rec.2008)
The main texture of the piece consists of different choir improvisational (aleatorical) techniques.
The use of the text also reflects on his ideas about the perfect society, where everyone contributes with his/her own unique values - of corse inspired by the experience: it exists, and it is called:
Halastó choir.
One of his most personal pieces.

Angelic Books in Meesters en Gezellen,
conducted by Daniel Reuss, a best-of
selection from 9 concerts all over Nl

Listen here to 'ANGELIC BOOKS'
Three movements with three angelic comments, for three mixed choirs
on diverse texts from the time of WW1, in different languages & setups

The third big movement is based on a Hungarian novel, from which the title of the whole collection came. Although written 100 years ago, the text reflects on a growing problem in our modern world: violent and fanatic nationalism. The writer, Kosztolányi, appoints it as one of the main reasons that lead to WW1 – and wars in general. Shouldn’t we learn from it? And ‘teach our children to love Humans…and make peace?’

Stabat Mater - for double mixed choir, male choir and childrens' choir (2010)
Written for the graduation of Orsolya Juhasz, I had to incorporate her amateur male choir in a professional context of the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy Choir. The text restrained me to a very classical approach.

BUT - IS IT ALLOWED?
A mini oratorio made for
Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and
Groot Omroepkoor

After months without the option to make music together, on the first occasion that 30 people could come together, and record, Georgi had the honour to compose for the top ensembles of The Netherlands: The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Radio Choir! Even in a small setup, in a big circle - safe distance from each other - the singers and musicians managed to express all the mixed feelings of the lockdown - uncertainty, frustration, and the 'polyphonic loss' - on the texts of Ewa Maria Wagner. Composed in only 2 weeks, rehearsed in a day and recorded in a day, it is a last-minute minute-made minioratorio.
Sonnet 65 - for 12 voices (2008)
- text by Shakespeare
Composing for vocal ensembles was always one of his favorite genres.
This piece uses strict diatonic cluster esthetics.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE PIECES

The deeper you are, the more they want (2010)
In 2010 he worked with Asko|Schönberg in
their young composers' project, 9x7
One month before the final deadline we had a workshop, where some of the performers expressed how much they miss expression indications from modern scores (lugubre, amabile etc.)
That gave him the idea to put a free association in the score above each phrase of each player.
It helped the performers get immediately to the musical world the composer imagined.
The deeper you are, the more they want
It comes, it goes (2017)
A transcription of a string trio into an instrumental ensemble piece, played by The Odd 7
NO WAY (2007)

SONGS

Singing and (co)composing - VULNUS
A music theatre piece for Gaudeamus

A successful collaboration with Irene Sorozabal (voice, recorders) and Manuel Sanchez Garcia (composer), observing the power of vulnerability more then just as a content, but also as a state in which the performers have to exist.
With the lights and dramaturgic advice of Emese Csornai, premiered on Gaudeamus music week in 2018 September.

Beauty in isolation: Sleep, restore my

During the months of staying in and self isolate, finally there was more time to focus on the inside. Time slowed down, thoughts cleared up, the focus shifted.
What can one find in such sleep-like state of mind? The ambivalent relation to this forced calm also brought to life a beautiful project.
Francisca Branco's research on Händel ornaments brought Georgi to compose a new piece, based on 'Oh Sleep, why dost thou leave me?' from the opera Semele. Listen to the piece, recorded with Francisca, Leonid Nikishin on violin and the composer himself on organ. Beautiful video by René Geerlings.
Read the essay about the creation in the description of the video!
Nunc dimittis (from the 'Evensong')
- for Soprano and Viola (2010)
Reut Rivka - soprano, Maya Felixbrodt - viola

'Une Pierre' for soprano and vibraphone
- a song for Sara Moreira Marques and Renato Penêda

Written in 2013 originally for piano and voice -
A year later Georgi composed a new version with vibraphone.
Proud of the duo which performs this song so delicate and powerful.
Hope to hear many more performances by them.

FUGA - Mikrokozmosz

Sztojanov was chosen to be part of the prestigious project of FUGA center in Budapest to record his piece 'Collect for aid' from his Anglican Vespers, 'Evensong' (2010).
The series is focused to capture solo performers transform their listeners by interpreting very personal pieces. Orsolya Juhász, a very close friend of the composer shows her devotion to his musical style, as they have been making music together for nearly 20 years now.
Malchanie (Silence) - for Soprano and Violin
(2007)
composing on bulgarian texts opened his music to another direction: a more honest, direct and personal diatonic world, very simplistic and yet truly emotional.

String trio - for violin, viola and cello (2006)

A simple canon, spread in registers creates surprising textures. Slow motion, so we observe each note as a happening. Recorded on a lunch concert in 2012 Cyprus Youth Orchestra session, originally written as part of the wedding ceremony songs for Katalin Koltai's wedding in 2012.

INSTRUMENTAL SOLO WORKS

TIME ETUDES - from VULNUS
Time etudes is a cycle for one performer playing two recorders and singing a third line.
Irene Sorozabal Moreno's unique talent for such coordination virtuosity inspired Sztojanov to use limited 3 notes motive from John Dowland's 'Time stands still' - on each flute in a different key.
Different instruments have different tunings, the combination defines an interval.
Thus the etudes is a series, with one etude for each interval possible.
Listen to an excerpt: Reversed time, in minor third.
Dear if you change - or I'll never go in circles
Solo guitar piece (2008)
for Katalin Koltai, recording from her CD,
'Guitar Music'
The piece is based on 3 recurrent 'phases', the passionate, rational, and emotional, repeating and changing, but still remaining the same in their core.
